How are the players and coaches selected?

One of the most common questions that arise every year is how are the players nominated or selected.  Here is a breakdown of the process.

1) A player must be nominated by their own football coach.  It is important that they not only have the athletic skills to play in the game but also represent their school and community with good moral character.   All coaches from 1A-4A receive a nomination ballot in the fall to send in nominations for the following year's game, with ballots due prior the beginning of the winter school break.  Nominations are up to the discretion of the coach and will remain confidential in order to protect the interest of the coaches.   Please note, if you have questions as to the nomination of a player, please direct it to the nominating coach.

Here is the selection criteria sent to the coaches for nomination consideration.
1.  The player must be graduated from high school by the end of spring term.
2.  Please don’t nominate a player that has known scheduling conflicts during the week leading up to the game (ex: early college entrance, military boot camps, other sporting events, etc.)
3.  State Champions in 4A, 3A and 2A are entitled to two players.  All other schools will only be eligible for one player.
4.  The nominee must be of good moral character in addition to being a good football player.   Keep in mind that he is representing his school, his community and the charitable cause of the Shriners organization.
5.  Please do not select a player with recurring injuries.
6.  Be sure to indicate on the ballot if the player you are nominating is for offense, defense or both and position played.
7.  Coaches can also nominate players from other schools in your league.  Any votes will count as additional votes toward selection; however, they MUST be nominated but their own coach to be eligible for consideration.

2) The Coaching staff is selected based on the performance of the current football season ending.  Each side (east and west) are comprised of 1 coach from each of the levels 1A-4A.  The leagues rotate each year, with the 1st place coach being asked to participate.  If that coach is unable or unwilling then the 2nd place coach is asked.

Example of the League Rotation for the 3A level:
3A West Rotation:  2015 was the PacWest Conference, 2016 was the Lewis & Clark League and 2017 is the West Valley League
At the end of the 2016 Football season 1st place in the West Valley League was Dayton, so that coach was asked to participate for 2017
3A East Rotation:  2015 was Southern Cascade League, 2016 was Mountain Valley Conference and 2017 is the Eastern Oregon League

At the end of the 2016 Football season 1st place in the Eastern Oregon League was Vale, so that coach was asked to participate for 2017

3) Sometime near the end of January the coaches come together during an official scheduled East West committee meeting and go through their list of nominated players and select their roster.  All players are selected by the coaches and are not chosen by members of the Shriners.  From the nominations they build a team comprised of the following approximate mix.   However, there may be slight alterations to the mix based on necessary position coverage.

4A:  10 players
3A:    8 players
2A:    7 players
1A:    5 players
In addition to 30 players, up to 30 alternates will also be selected for each team.

4) The first part of February all nominated players and alternates will be contacted and ask to confirm their acceptance to play.  From there all required paperwork will be sent for completion.
